What do you think is the most important battle/battles in world history?

1. Battle of Issus 333bc
2. DDAY 1944
3. Siege of Vienna 1529
4. Battle of Trenton 1776

Upon research I believe these are the most important battles in world history. I've read others "so-called experts" top ten lists but I really don't think they impacted world history as much as these had. Most lists I've read have the typical, Hastings, Stalingrad, Waterloo...though In my opinion these typically drawn battles have little  significance in the scope of world history. I have reasons, lots and lots of reasons!!

I'm all about lists! curious to see your opinions too.

The "Battle of the Bulge", I think.

Seems many people still fight it to this day (Raven... among others) Kiss

Re: What do you think is the most important battle/battles in world history?

Alexander was really nothing else than a big dot in history, it ended the elder classical age, and The Battle of Issus was not a hugely important battle, i would'nt call Darius III a great millitary commander, but Alexander prooved that tactics and not strategy can win a battle (sorry if i switch the two of them, you know what i mean)

the Battle of Stalingrad ended before it started... really... and i dont see battles that allready are won before they start as "changing world history"

I agree that Waterloo shaped Europe for atleast a 100 years...

1. Can't really settle on a first, but i would say siege of Leningrad and battle of Moscow.
2. Charles Martel's Franks defeating the Moors at Tours
3. Battle of Teutoberg Forrest 9.AD (beginning of the fall of the roman empire)
3. Battle of Gettysburg

The "Battle of the Bulge", I think.

i disagree... the battle or the bulge was a fail before it stated (in the greater picture) the Germans did'nt had the gas to reach Antwepen which was their goal, and at that time, the waar was allready won...

Re: What do you think is the most important battle/battles in world history?

Battle of Stanford Bridge

Without which Harold would have been ideally placed to counter William with his full army ( many were released after this battle to gather the crops in ).

Battle of Britain

A contraversial one this.....Did Hitler want to invade or didn't he ? In the end they couldn't even if he had wanted to without suffering catastrophic casualties.

Inchon Landing

Does anybody here believe that had the Chinese and N.Koreans pushed the US/UN/S.Korean forces into the sea that they would have stopped there ? ? ? ? ? ?    Shocked
In my opinion the Inchon landings success possibly and I stress possibly stopped a Superpower Nuclear Exchange and WW3.

Only in our dreams are we free.........

Re: What do you think is the most important battle/battles in world history?

1) 405bc Battle of Aegospotami

2) 1940 Battle of France

3) 480bc Battle of Thermopylae

___________________________________

1) because of the successful annihilation of the Athenian navy by the Spartans.  The Athenians had always been the more sea fairing city state.

2) The best thought out and executed battle plan in all of WW2.  It also had one of the best commanders (I feel) of the war.  "By 17 May, Rommel had taken 10,000 prisoners and suffered only 36 losses" (a quote during the battle).  It could have been in first place, if Hitler hadn't stopped Rommel advances.  Though he may have been outrunning his supplies and lost contact with HQ, Rommel was a smart man and new what he was doing (later confirmed in Africa).

3) If it weren't for this battle, Xerxes would have waltzed right into Greece.  I know most people say "oh thats when the 300 spartans stopped all of those Persians", but technically it was Spartans and some others, with the main bulk of the force retreated to the rear after realizing that Xerxes had managed to flank them.  Arriving a few months before the Persians, this battle demonstrates the benefits of having the choice of where to fight as well as superior training and armor.  But in the end the Greek Alliance lost this battle so it must stay at number 3.

Re: What do you think is the most important battle/battles in world history?

Battle of New Orleans

The Battles of the Isonzo

And I'd continue with my sarcastic reply by including Gallipoli but that's like pointless on the outcome of the war but very important for Aussies and Kiwis.

Re: What do you think is the most important battle/battles in world history?

Great feedback!thanks....with the amount of free time I have since computer is broken, I have been reading just about everything I can get ahold of. So you guys have given me ideas of which to read up on!

Battle of Aegospotami
Battle of the Isonzo
Teutoberg Forrest 9a.d.

Battle of the Bulge: Critical battle in WWII, However, when in scope of world history not too valuable. I believe Battle of Britain would have a higher value...idk As far as Stalingrad, the Germans if they'd won it would have been to exhausted in manpower and resources to do much more. One last thought, Is that DDAY is mightily important for the fact of opening second front and if anything Keep the communists from making Europe 100% a Bloc of Communist nations. I know that historic value of these things is what perspective you are. Of course, Britains think Battle of Britain is important,(I like to think that America would have entered immediately if outcome was not what it was=)  and Russians think Stalingrad is as well. For me as a nerdy history buff, I try to take all perspectives into account. Try not to over exaggerate American battles and what is considered truly valuable in Historic events.

What is very interesting and quite valuable is the many battles of Islam versuses Christianity. Seems as though this struggle will never end. As many historic events, battles, politics, and religion have shown all throughout history.  One prime example is, The Ottoman Empire as one of the greatest empires ever and left a indelible mark for hundreds of years after it's demise.

current read is, "A Short History of the World" by J.M. Roberts

this is a very interesting topic imo.
